      <image:title>Foot Pain - Foot Pain</image:title>
      <image:caption>If your dogs are barking, there could be any number of reasons for it. Poor footwear is usually at the top of the list. If you consider the amount of walking most of us do, it’s no wonder that an ill-fitted shoe could be at the root of your problem. If you’re a runner, it’s essential to change your running shoes every 300-500 miles or every six months, whichever comes first. Heredity also plays a role in it but a surprisingly small one. Even though your parents might have bunions they are most commonly caused by friction from a tight, unyielding, or poorly designed shoe. Foot pain can also be referred pain caused by trigger points in any of the lower leg muscles. If rubbing your feet doesn’t seem to be helping much, then trigger point therapy to the lower leg might just do the trick. Here are a few common foot conditions and their causes: High Arches (Pes Cavus): Exaggerated longitudinal arches can predispose you to conditions such as plantar fasciitis, hammer toe, claw toe,  and metatarsalgia. Common causes include poor footwear, heredity, bone or joint disease. Flat Feet (Pes Planus): Collapsed or fallen arches often due to the weakening or overstretching of ligaments. Common causes include poor footwear, heredity, bone or joint disease, obesity. Bunions (Hallux Valgus): A deformity of the big toe. Often caused when the mp joint (metatarsal-phalangeal joint) rubs against the shoe resulting in inflammation, formation of a bursa, and finally a calcification of that bursa. The result is a toe that deviates away from the midline of the foot and is usually painful to most. Hammer Toe/Claw Toe: A curling of the toes usually due to poor footwear or heredity. Metatarsalgia: Pain under the metatarsal heads of the feet. Common causes include a collapsed transverse arch, a subluxation of the 2nd or 3rd mp joints, Morton’s neuroma, Morton’s foot structure, excessive pronation of the foot, high heeled shoes, and tight calf muscles. Morton’s Neuroma: A thickening of nerve tissue usually between the 3rd or 4th toes. The neuroma then becomes compressed under the metatarsal heads resulting in pain. Often caused by irritation or injury to the foot. Morton’s Foot Structure: A condition whereby the 2nd mp joint is longer than the 1st. Ordinarily, the foot bears the weight of your body between the 1st mp joint, the 5th mp joint, and the heel. This tripod configuration is nature’s way of allowing your foot to adapt to uneven surfaces while keeping your balance. When the the 2nd mp joint is longer than the 1st (a long second toe does not necessarily indicate a longer mp joint), it makes contact with the ground first redistributing the weight between the second joint and the heel. When this happens it’s equivalent to walking on ice skates! Fairly common (occurring in 1 in 4 people) and often overlooked, this increased instability at the ankles can result in problems as far away as the head and neck. Plantar Fasciitis: A painful condition caused by inflammation of the plantar fascia of the foot. Common causes include excessive pronation of the foot, high arches, and tight calf muscles. Pain is usually felt along the  medial arch of the foot and can be most tender in the morning during those first few steps. Chronic inflammation and irritation of the fascia can often lead to heel spurs. Achilles Tendinitis: Inflammation and swelling of the Achilles tendon as a result of overuse or direct trauma. Prevalent amongst  runners and jumpers, pain from Achilles tendonitis can range from a diffuse tenderness at the back of the heel, to an intense, burning pain which can be quite debilitating. Heels Spurs: A boney outgrowth of the heel (calcaneus) often formed from chronic plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendinitis. Corns/Calluses: A thickening of the skin caused by localized friction. Calluses tend to be relatively flat whereas corns are usually conical in shape and can be hard and painful. They can occur on the hands and feet and are the body’s way of protecting itself from constant irritation. Plantar’s Warts: Small benign skin growths at the soles of the feet caused by the human papilloma virus. Plantar’s warts are usually flat and surrounded by thick skin. They can be very tender to some and are easily spread from one area of the body to another. Athlete’s Foot: A fungal infection that grows between the toes and over the sides of the feet. Highly contagious, it can produce scaling, itching, or painful rash.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Shoulder Pain - Shoulder Pain</image:title>
      <image:caption>Why does the pain in your shoulder persist? More on the effects of trigger points…  If you’ve ever dealt with chronic pain, you know how debilitating and frustrating it can be. This is especially true if your physician can’t find anything wrong or if that last massage did nothing to diminish the pain. Most of us have experienced the short-term effects of muscular pain — whether it’s from waking up with a stiff neck, to next day soreness from overdoing it at the gym. These aches and pains tend to work themselves out and usually dissipate within a few days. But what happens when the pain does not go away? The underlying source could be trigger points. The science behind trigger points and related myofascial pain has been around for many years, yet it remains widely unknown to many healthcare practitioners. The pioneering work  of Dr. Janet G. Travell in the 1950’s  led to numerous scientific studies, which prove the existence of trigger points by way of electromyographical instruments and the use of an electron microscope. Her research and efficacy in the field eventually led to her appointment as President John F. Kennedy’s personal  physician to the White House. Together with long time colleague, David G. Simons M.D., Travell published over 100 scientific articles and books, most notably the two-volume “Myofascial Pain and Dysfunction: The Trigger Point Manual.” According to Travell and Simons, a trigger point is “a highly irritable localized spot of exquisite tenderness in a nodule in a palpable taut band of muscle tissue.” Let’s break that down. Firstly, trigger points are painful! There’s no doubt about it. They especially hurt when you press on them directly. Secondly, these tiny contractions form a nodule in the muscle fiber which emit a measurable electrical charge and can be felt as knots or lumps. And finally, these nodules can shorten your muscle, limit your range of motion, and often feel like a cord or tendon under the skin. Okay, so we’ve defined what a trigger point is, but what exactly does a trigger point do? And why should we care? The most important thing to remember when talking about trigger points is that they refer pain to other parts of the body. Herein lies the key to understanding and treating that mysterious shoulder pain that just won’t go away. Let’s take a look at the diagram below.</image:caption>

      <image:title>A Brief History - A Brief History</image:title>
      <image:caption>Reiki was developed by a Japanese Buddhist monk name Dr. Mikao Usui in the early 1900’s. Dr. Usui had grown up practicing ‘Kiko’ (a Japanese version of Qi Gong), which he used in his treatments but found to be depleting of his own personal energy. It wasn’t until a spiritual retreat many years later that he discovered Reiki through a satori experience. This new form of energy, which he later went on to call ‘universal life force energy,’ no longer left him depleted. The energy flowed through him with a source and intelligence all its own. He would later develop a protocol that used the laying on of hands as the focus for the energy. As Reiki grew in popularity throughout Japan it remained virtually unknown to the western world until the late 1930s when Ms. Hawayo Takata brought it over to Hawaii. Ms. Takata had been taught by Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, who had been one of Dr. Usui’s first students. Together, Ms. Takata and Dr. Hayashi lectured and gave treatments throughout Hawaii, introducing Reiki to a whole new population. There are three basic tenets that set Reiki apart from other forms of energy work. Firstly, the ability to perform Reiki is passed down from teacher to student through a series of attunements. These attunements serve to ‘awaken’ the student to this new form of healing. There is a lineage to the symbols and techniques used in Reiki which must be passed down to new practitioners. Secondly, Reiki does not require that we guide the energy with our mind. Reiki energy has its own intelligence and knows exactly where to go and what to do. All that is required is the holding of space. And finally, Reiki can do no harm. Reiki energy is only distinguished  by the people who practice it. In its purest form the energy is universal and ultimately the essence of who we are. Everyone has their own unique energy field which typically extends out from the body anywhere from a few inches to a few feet. Contained within this field – or aura as it’s commonly called – are all the thoughts, emotions, and experiences that make us who we are. In a normal, healthy body the energy flows freely and unencumbered. However, when trauma occurs, whether it’s physical, mental or emotional, a kink can develop and impede this free flow of energy. This can manifest as pain, illness, depression, or myriad of other symptoms. Reiki can help dissolve these kinks by introducing a new energetic pattern and re-establishing harmony within the body. Areas of disrepair within the body will often emit an energetic field that is discordant and out of sync with the rest of the body. Reiki practitioners can often pick up on these subtle differences either by way of intuition or sense perception.  For example, the energetic quality can be akin to a feeling of weakness and depletion in areas where trauma is chronic, or erratic and intense when it’s acute. The body has enormous potential to heal itself. Reiki merely facilitates your body’s natural healing ability by reminding it of what its natural, healthy state feels like.</image:caption>

This very ancient form of bodywork uses elements of compression, rocking, stretching, and various yoga poses to create a therapeutic response. But there are a few key distinctions which set it apart from a traditional Swedish or deep tissue massage. If you’re new to massage or if you’re trying to decide which is best for you, knowing what to expect may make that decision a little easier to make. Let’s take a look at some of the main differences between a Thai massage and a table massage. No table: One of the main differences between Thai massage and a table massage is that Thai massage is done on a mat on the floor. A traditional Swedish/deep tissue massage is done on a massage table. No need to undress: Thai massage is done fully clothed wearing loose, comfortable clothing. A full body table massage is usually done with the client partially or fully undressed, underneath a sheet and cover. No lotions or oils: A Thai massage does not use any crèmes, lotions, oils, or gels. Whereas a table massage can use any of the latter in its application. Techniques: A Thai massage will often use elements of compression, rocking, stretching, breath work and range of motion to create its therapeutic effect. A table massage may also use elements such as these but mainly focuses on techniques such as kneading, stroking, effleurage/petrissage, and friction for breaking up of adhesions and knots. Energetic component: A Thai massage incorporates energy line work through the use of palming and thumbing of the Sen lines in the body. A traditional Swedish/deep tissue massage does not work these energy lines specifically. Stretching: As mentioned already, Thai massage uses a great deal of stretching to address areas of tension and to relieve energy blockages. A table massage may also incorporate stretching but not to the extent that a Thai massage does. Positions used: In traditional table massage, most will lie face down (prone position) or face up (supine position) for a majority of their session. On occasion a side-lying position is used for targeted work. In Thai massage however, in addition to both the prone and supine positions, the side-lying, semi-prone, and seated positions are used as well. Given these differences, one form of massage may be better suited for you than the other. Although both have their therapeutic qualities, personal preferences and expectations may have a significant impact on how the work is received. Also, each practitioner may have his or her own unique style, which will influence the work as well. No matter which form of massage you choose, make sure to seek out a knowledgeable, well-trained, and licensed professional to ensure you’re getting the best possible work available.</image:caption>
